2001

Stardate: 07.12.01 - The Enterprising Event
This home event at Daniel's Quarters went really well. There was a nice lucky 13 crewmembers in attendance and the event went onto the early hours of the next morning. The home event kept well to the program devised in the original plan in watching Evolution but once the Admiral left the plan took on a different tangent. Under a unanimous decision the entire group decided that watching the latest selection of Enterprise episodes would be a better choice than advertised program. So the evening was instantly converted into a Future's Edge event. We watched the one hour pilot "Broken Bow (01 & 02)" which featured the 1st mission of the Enterprise crew as they take a Klingon back to his home planet. Then we watched "Unexpected (05)" where one of the MALE crewmembers get up the duff by an alien! Then "Terra Nova (06)" which the Enterprise crew visit an Earth colony thought to be lost in space but have evolved in an unusual tangent. Then lastly we watched "Andorian Incident (07)" which involves the humans 1st encounter with the Andorian's when they capture a suspected Vulcan spy station.

Stardate: 02.11.01 - Firework Mission - Captain Gets A Rocketing
USS Lutonia Captain Max Pearson got a right rocketing recently while on duty. Captain Max was attending a rather potential explosive situation along with other Lutonia members in the quarters of Lt Jnr Phil Doyle. Phil or "Mr D" as he likes to be known laid on an excellent night of Fireworks, Beer, some great chilli courtesy of an excellent cook in Karen. Add to this a rock band and some music playing by Phil himself. The fireworks went on for most of the evening and it was during the first session the Captain Max received his rocketing. While standing outside watching the fireworks with the rest of the crew. The remains of a Rocket falling back to Earth hit Max. Fortunately our ships Senior Medical Officer Deborah Burke was on hand to make sure Captain Max was not too badly hurt. Back in Lt Jnr Doyles quarters the beer and food flowed while the band played. For the cadets present and other members of the crew. Entertainment came in the life forms of Tom and Jerry. It certainly was an excellent night of entertainment and not only did we have fun but also Phil raised £20 for the club funds. Many thanks to Phil for a great night out.

Stardate: 19.10.01 - Westworld Classic Event
This event held in the Jones Quarters consisted of DS9, Timeslip, Westworld and Future World. Due to the event being so long we will have to continue the conclusion of Timeslip to our next Classic event. However members enjoyed seeing Yule Brenner in what was his only visit into the world of science fiction. Though members did find Timeslip heavy going and it had to be explained to the cadets why it was in good old black and white. But for the rest of us it was a trip down memory lane and it was weird how many of the predictions were almost right.

Stardate: 12.10.01 - Club Borgo Event
This was our November event brought forward to make up for the cancelled event of September. The evening went well despite numbers being down due to families on holidays and illness. We started with some old favourites returning namely Borgo and the video quiz. Also there was a robot making game, members who did turn up thoroughly enjoyed themselves and even got to meet a new holographic life form called the Jolly Todgers. Who represented a new temporary element to our ship.

Stardate: 14.09.01 - Gerry Anderson Evening
Our club Gerry Anderson evening was held in the Crouchers quarters. The evening consisted of Space 1999,Thunderbirds and UFO. Also wheeled out for a second showing was the clubs only episode of Supercar which was the marvel of it’s age. Also heavily featuring was Stingray and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. The evening had no strings attached and members had a free vote on what to watch. Crew attendance 10

Stardate: 17.08.01 - Classic Event - Planet Of The Apes
There was plenty of monkeying around to be had as the crew members attending were in for a treat.
Starting off with Star Trek the next Generation. Where Worf was not sure if his birthday cake was chocolate or yellow sponge. We moved through the world of the bloodthirsty Virus that resembled early Borg. Ending up in the terrifying world of the Clangers and the Hoots. And what a hoot or clanger it was as everyone was glued to the screen. Finally we took a trip with Charlton Heston to where it all began on "Planet of the apes" followed by the excellent "Battle Beneath the planet of the apes" by 2am the crew finally left totally ape-austed. Event attendance: 15 crew

Stardate: 12.08.01 - Genesis Away Mission
USS Lutonia away teams in the forms of a Delta flyer and the Galileo shuttlecrafts recently travelled to visit the Genesis sci-fi club who were celebrating their fifth birthday. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. Anyway the away team in the Galileo shuttlecraft were treated to the exotic sounds of Ivor Biggun and the Red Nosed Burglars (who?) singing such ditties as "I’m a Winker (misprint) followed by the reggae sounds of Judge Dread. Needless to say some of the away team seemed in a state of shock by the time we arrived. Was because of the lyrics or the fact the Galileo almost crashed into a asteroid belt in the Reading region.
Upon our arrival away team members had a choice of either watching the Farscape videos in one room. Or going into the main hall where many different activities were taking place. These included playing a number of different home made board games. As some members of the Genesis crew were obviously Gamesters. The board games consisted of a three dimensional version of Star Trek snakes and ladders. It had something to do with Jeffries tubes . Another looked more like a WWF wrestling ring and featured cardboard characters fighting each other. If games were not your scene then you could watch a specially made Genesis clip on a big screen. As the day went on we split up into teams to play team games featuring play dough and quizzes. We also met members of LOTNA who have invited us to their attend their events held in a pub on the banks of the River Thames by London Bridge.
Many thanks go to Daniel Praid for setting this up. Away Team attendance 8 crewmembers.

Star Date: 04.08.01 - Dr Who Barbie Q
Despite the torrential rain on the day. The efforts of Dr Who fan and club member Gary Pearce who was holding the Dr Who event were to be admired. Not only had Gary set up a shelter protecting the chef who was cooking a mountain of food. There was beer everywhere stored in buckets and a bath in the garden. Club members who turned up were treated to a feast of food and Dr Who videos such as "Planet of the Spiders" and many comedy clips that were a parody of the great show itself . Towards the end of the evening club members were sat around Garys house chanting "Hom" "Hom" or "All Praise to the great one" through out the evening. These were lines from the Dr Who video that kept cropping up and when they did everyone chanted the lines which was great fun. Even so by 1am the chant was more of a "home, home" as everyone left in the pouring rain to go home to different dimensions. Many thanks go to Club member Gary Pearce on putting this event together and letting the club use his home and food for free. Everyone who went had a great time. Event attendance: 15 crew members

Stardate: 20.07.01 - Klingon Games Event
If you were a reporter from the Herald and Post or on any other team but the Admirals then you all cheated. Seriously though the Co-op event held on Friday 20th July turned out to be well attended and well enjoyed by all who took part. Members of the crew were divided up into small teams. Who were then given the mission of stopping a rogue Klingon ship from destroying Starfleet Headquarters. There was plenty of inter team rivalry as all teams battled to become the supreme team and win the day. However the Admirals team which consisted of the main drinking engines of the club namely the Admiral, Steve Maguire,. A rogue Klingon in the form of Richard Daubney, Daniel Praid and a man impersonating a Herald and Post reporter and lastly Dr Gary Pearce Who. Unexpectedly despite the flowing ales they were well in front thanks to some very clever innovation. Namely nicking lightbulbs from out of the toilets. Having the only £2 coin in the building. But despite being at least two levels in front of other teams the marshalls decided to level the playing field and give the other teams the all important Klingon deciphering answers. This was a bad decision as it meant all teams were level and the cheating really got into full swing. The teams had to collect four coloured ribbons and some certain other team members began nicking other teams ribbons in order to prevent them from winning. However most of us saw the whole point of the game. Which was to have fun and enjoy yourself whatever the result. And most of us did as it was a good social event.

Stardate: 15.07.01 - Trip to Genesis Sci-fi club
The away team made another successful visit to the Genesis Sci-fi club. This time we decided to get involved with some film watching which Genesis expriemented with by providing a seperate room in which sci-fi programmes such as the latest Farscape and the remaking of Dune (part 1) was played. This meant that we weren't disturbed by the falore going on in the main hall. We rejoined the rest of Genesis to partake in one of the best quizzes that I have attended so far - this was very taxing which mainly involved time and time-travel questions - it also involved movie and sound clips. Then the whole hall emptied as we made a mass-exedous to the Chinese shop down to road - the poor cook didn't know what was coming! After dinner we had the raffle - again we won a computer game! - I'm getting quite good at this hehe!! After raffle most of the members of Genesis continued playing role playing games and other activites - including a spot of badminton in the field behind the village hall. While the rest of us went to the side hall to watch the last episodes of Farscape. After the event we were invited to attend Genesis next event which is their 5th year anniversary - there will be many other clubs attending that they are affilitated with including LOTNA which was another club which we have been talking to. They will be putting on a buffet so we need to get a rough idea of how many people are going so please let me or Andy know if you want to attend - full details on the events page.

Stardate: 06.07.01 Gore night
The event enjoyed a more modest turn up of 6 members in total. Whether it was due to the screamish nature of the event or the humidity of the weather. We managed to watch Braindead, Bad Taste & Dawn of the Dead all more or less back to back. Most of us suvived the night feeling slightly nauseous while others, more worriying, laughed though most of the action. I suppose what with scenes such as a Vicor doing Karate on a pack of Zomibies shouting "I kick arse for the Lord" or dialogues like "your mum ate my dog" and "not all of it" as a tail is pulled out from her mouth - then I'm not really surprised that it tickled a few funny bones here and there. We finished off at about 1am as everyone sloped off into the warm night into darkness moir ha ha ha [evil laugh]. Sorry got a bit carried away there! I think maybe the next gore eveining should include a free session with the ships counsellor or perhaps erm maybe not!

Stardate:24.06.01 Away Mission to Starbase 410
The USS Lutonia sent a small away team consisting of some six members not including two joint club members to the Starbase 410 Barbie Q. Unfortunately upon our arrival we had to beam out to the Ferengi bar down the road (the Cock pub) as Starbase were having an AGM and were not ready for us. Where the bar staff sadly informed us that they were all leaving to begin new lives in another quadrant. The good news is that as they all think the Lutonia is a great club. We have been invited to attend their new ferengi bar party when it opens in a few months wherever that might be. Anyway once the bar formalities where sorted out. We made our way back to Starbase 410 for the rest of their event.

Stardate:22.06.01 Sardines Event
Pictures
Well that was what it felt like at the X Men Classic science fiction evening recently. The event was held in the Jones Quarters and a record twenty one members made it a record attendance for this type of club event. The attending crew were treated to such culinary delights as "Stone Trek", video clips of our prize winning float at the recent carnival. Also Blake 7, Thunderbirds, and the all time famous special effects movie "20 Million Miles To Earth" and of course "X Men" As you have probably guessed by now it was so squashed we all felt like sardines in a can.

Stardate: 20.6.01 New Faces voted to Committee
On Wednesday 20th June at the Co-op hall in Luton. A historic meeting took place that has some very important implications for our club. The membership turned out to vote for their choice of three candidates from four candidates standing. To become committee members and join the four members who had already been voted on at the recent AGM. The motion for this had been put forward at that AGM and Wednesday saw the final conclusion of that motion. From the 20th June onwards the USS Lutonia main Committee now consists of seven members instead of four. Those members are as pictured above namely Andrew Fazekas, Sean and Amanda Drew, Steve Maguire, Mark Cornwall, Ann Poulton and finally Keith Batt. Our congratulations go to those new Committee members on your new promotion. Also we commiserate with those candidates who put themselves up for election, but did not get elected at this time.

Stardate:28.05.01 USS Lutonia Luton International Carnival Float Winners 2001
Pictures
USS Lutonia enters the biggest one day carnival festival in the country and wins the top trophy watched by 140,000 people and beating off competition from the carnival community. Here's what the papers had to say
"Trek Teams Bold Victory"-The Keenly contested competition for the carnival prizes saw the USS Lutonia sci-fi fans take the Top Float Title with the Starlight Community Steel Band named runners up in the category. And young dancers from Dance Fantasia in Third place.- Luton News-Stardate:30.5.01
"Earth To Carnival-Come Aboard"-Mr Spock would probably dismiss it as illogical. But the estimated 140,000 crowd, which flocked to Luton for Monday's carnival was having too much fun to care. And a smile could even have creased the care worn Vulcan's face as the sci-fi fans from the USS Lutonia group. Complete with Star Trek and Dr Who characters aboard took first prize for the best float in the parade. The organisers determination to make the Carnival 2001 an even more authentic, traditional carnival FOR the people BY the people certainly paid off. Herald And Post Stardate:31.05.01
But in order for the Lutonia to become carnival kings, some of the crew spent long evenings painting and building our carnival entry from household rubbish. In the end we built Daleks, a Tardis, Lost in Space, K9, Palm Trees and Thunderbirds 2 from nothing but hard graft. I personally will miss those long evenings because even though it was hard work it was fun getting covered in paint and glitter etc. Also there was the socialising element to it. Therefore my special thanks go to the following for their input over the last five weeks: Mark Cornwall, Dawn Rowe, Ann Poulton, Ann Jones, Ron Jones, Catti Caraca, Daniel Praid, Judith McCool Keith Batt, thanks also goes to helpers on the day namely John Kelly, Bobby Presley, John Boyle, Phil Baker. Special thanks also go to Sean and Amanda Drew for stepping in to face the radio media for me. A big thank you to you to all from the Admiral for making those cold evenings special. It was great being aboard the winning float and showing the world that science fiction fans can have fun as well as anybody else. Not only this but with the help of the Lady Zia Werner school children dressed up as Thunderbirds and with the help of Harvey and his Cybermen and Tardis we were unbeatable on the day. It was great to see our club name riding high in the local papers as carnival winners and despite the Luton News getting caught with their pants down by not printing our picture as they thought another group would win. For which they have promised exclusive coverage of our July event to make up for it. Shame on you at the Luton News. This has to be the one of the highlights in this clubs history. Something to tell your grandchildren and future members about in years to come.

Stardate: 20.05.01 - 2nd Scouting Party to Genesis Sci-fi club
Yet another scouting party was arranged to Genesis. We arrived a little late due to problems with the space-time continuum (we weren't in the correct space at the right time or the right space and the correct time or somthin like that!) anyway we met several new members and was introduced to a board game called Settlers which was quite addictive - (reminder to buy it for one of my games nights!) although it was quite a peaceful game and I was desperate to assimilate as much land as poss and acquire some nukes - shame the game didn't contain them!! but hey before we knew it we had acquired yet more raffle prizes and munched more chips and watched several of the latest Farscape vids and went on our merry route back to Luton.

Stardate: 18.05.01 - USS-Lutonia Fifth Anniversary Event
Pictures
This was a good birthday bash as the club celebrated the remarkable achievement of reaching five years of existence. Members were asked to come along dressed up as a five-year old. Many of the members actually role-played as five years olds as well. Which was quite funny especially when playing a certain pub game of it’s a knockout where ten members were given away missions such as find a pair of men’s socks or a get another member to draw your name on your forehead with lipstick or a pen. Once given their orders members raced around the hall trying to achieve their aims and the last one back was out. Everyone enjoyed this game and when Steve Maguire and John Kelly went flying over the top of one chair they were both trying to sit on and knocked the Admirals pint over as well it was hysterical. Afterwards members played musical chairs and three male members took part in a half Monty run by the disco for our female crewmembers. The event ran from 8pm to midnight and was well attended especially be an away team from Starbase 410 who not only dressed up for the event. But turned up in numbers which was much appreciated.

Stardate: 11.05.01 - Sci-fi Fright Night
Daniel Praid laid on an evening of entertainment for the club members in his quarters. There was a very good turn out of about fourteen members in all. Who were treated to a gut wrenching vision of aliens bursting forth from stomachs. The event went on till about 4am which was some going for the members who stayed the course. [and beat the current record of the longest video night].

Stardate: 25.4.01 - Club AGM
A good turn out of some thirty members saw the re-election to the committee of Andrew Fazekas as club chairman. Sean Drew as Vice-chairman, Steve Maguire as Treasurer and Amanda Drew as Secretary. However there was a twist in the proceedings when a proposal to extend the committee by three extra positions was narrowly voted in by the membership. The membership decided to return on the 20th June to select the new committee members. In the meantime the newly elected committee was to carry out it’s normal duties.

Stardate: 22.04.01 - Scouting party to Genesis Sci-Fi club
Full Report
In an effort to make contact with other clubs I sent out an email to several clubs around the south-east - I got many responses - the most welcoming was from Genesis Sci-Fi Club in Hampshire. Judith and I became the scouting party and established first contact. The club was very welcoming and was happy to greet us. We really enjoyed the full day event and made many new friends. Full report in the link above.

Stardate: 20.04.01 - Earth versus the Flying Saucers
A new record turn out of sixteen crewmembers squashed into the Admirals Quarters to witness the very worst of classic sci-fi. The crew were treated to the much requested Sapphire and Steel versus the ghostly railway station. Also we saw Dr Who fighting shop window dummies that were accosting the public. And if it couldn’t get any worse it did with a totally awful story of Victorians landing on the Moon and fighting Moon men and giant caterpillars. Lastly to really put you in the mood for sleep we managed to get through Earth Versus The Flying Saucers. Classic SCI fi at it’s best where flying saucers abducted humans and special effects abducted the senses or was it the alcohol and early morning hours. Anyway it was SCI fi fun at it’s best and well enjoyed by all the crew who attended.

Stardate: 23.03.01 - Play Event
This month we would like to thank Max Pearson and Mark Cornwall for putting on our last event at the Co-op club. It was a good effort to boldly go where no one has gone before. By trying a new format of quizzes and short plays put together by the members themselves. The attendance was good with about forty in total including one renewal of membership and one new family membership bringing our membership up to around fifty. Not only did we all have a good time if you were taking part in the games. But the club made a new business connection as well.

Stardate: 16.03.01 - Games Night (report submitted by Lt. Commander Daniel Praid)
Transmission to Hive regarding secondary assimilation protocal. After my inital report most of the humans involved wanted to come back for more - I couldn't understand this condition so I complied. The investigation went a lot better then the last - firstly more people in attendance which came to a total of 11 entites - possible all human but I have my doubts. The evening started with a few alcholic based liquids which were consumed with eager and then several games to lull them into a false sense of security and then after a game of Scattagories and Pictionary we proceeded on with the intinary with an earth film called '2010' - this was a comedy on earth people getting into space - although they didn't even get past their own star system! - and the level of technology was laughable! - the humans enjoyed the whole event and some maybe ready for assimilation on the next testing phase. End of Transmission.
Probable Pot bellied Pig Pope of Peterborough (report submitted by Admiral Andy Fazekas)
Well just in case you are wondering if we have gone mad and what on earth is this article about. Don’t worry, it all stems from an excellent evening of fun that was to be had a Daniel's on a club games night. You can read more about this in Daniel's section of the Fanzine. However we would like to thank Daniel for letting us use his quarters and thanks also to all who turned up, even if you deprived the Admirals team of match winning points for good answers to questions like: Name a trade beginning with N ? Answer: Nodwell the 17th century furniture maker. And answers to questions like: What floats in water beginning with P ? Answer: The Pope. My team lost points for these original answers but it was fun which is what it is all about.

Stardate: 23.02.01 - Classic 2001 Science Fiction Event
Starting at 7.30pm in the Crouchers quarters this would prove to be a long evening indeed. And just like the last club event we had a flurry of snow. The evening started off with an early episode of Xena the warrior princess. After a break we went into the vampire world of Buffy the vampire slayer. Then came the main feature 2001 itself and I am sure many of the nine members present struggled with the concept of the film. They certainly struggled with the length of the film that seemed to last an eternity and it was many beers before it ended. Lastly we had a bonus video vote called Maxminum Overdrive and we ended up watching a film where machines ruled the world if only for a short period.

Stardate: 10.02.01 - Species Event
This was the clubs first event in crewman Bobby Presley's quarters and the attendance was good for the first event of this type that included some bloodthirsty scenes as bodies exploded forth giving birth to aliens. The evening consisted of Species one and two which meant unfortunately that the films were just too gross for cadets until next time.

Stardate: 09.02.01 - Open Forum Success
The first club open forum for some two years proved to be very productive on a cold February night. Around twelve club members turned up to discuss a wide range of subjects from Communication problems, trips, funds, and handbooks to merchandise, monthly forums and the March event. One of the popular ideas put forward was to form three working groups within the club structure that would be formed to carry out a specific task and keep the committee updated on the groups progress. The groups would not be committees as such, but small units that when their task was completed the group would be dissolved to allow it’s members to carry out work in other areas where needed just like a Borg ship. The groups to be formed were a events unit, a carnival unit and a merchandise unit.

Stardate: 29.01.01 - "A Knight With O’Brien" TV Show
On Monday 29th January we went on our away mission to Norwich to appear on Anglia Television with TV Presenter James O’Brien in his new TV Show. We set off just after 3pm just nine of us on a forty-nine seater coach that was fitted for luxury. We had to make a stop at Kentford to pick up more personnel from Starbase 410. Everyone who went looked superb really making an effort with uniforms. We were there in plenty of time and after refreshments of free beer and light consumables we were taken up to the studio. Our part of the show was in the second half and up until that moment we had expected the worst as James O’Brien had torn the previous guests apart by taking the pee. However when our clubs moment arrived we were thankfully proved wrong. Obviously James O’Brien had really enjoyed himself at our event previously and it showed as he admitted it on the show to the nation. Not only this but they had put together an excellent video clip that showed a light hearted and fun loving club. They also highlighted the fact it was a club for all ages. It was a refreshing change not to be labeled as "anoraks" or "trekkies" and after the show it was obvious the club had made many new friends and we took group photographs. On the way home we managed to get the coach driver to pull into the Cock Public House at Kentford for a couple of real drinks and some warm hospitality. The staff insisted they took some group photographs so all in all a major success to kickstart our year in the real millennium.

Stardate: 19.01.01 - Klingon Attack At New Club Venue
It was snow joke as our first event at our new bigger venue of the CO-OP club took place on a cold night in January. Not only did the Luton News turn up unexpectedly but also the TV presenter James O’Brien along with two film crews from Anglia TV at Norwich. It was certainly an action packed event no thanks to Engineering who had worked their com badges off and the Klingon Invaders who attacked us and kidnapped the Admiral. But before he could be returned for a Klingon fee of latinum. The Lutonia crew were divided up into three teams by Captain Cornwall and given information packs. Once they opened these packs they were under a time limit to complete a variety of tasks including beaming in and out of the building. Deciphering the Klingon language to complete directions and completing a maze blindfolded using two-way radios and cameras. All the time the crew was being harassed by angry Klingons who informed the teams of their time and status and the TV film crew were interviewing and filming the action for the show "A Night With O’Brien" (showing on Anglia TV Tuesday 30th January at 10.30pm).
Eventually our teams completed the maze then had to contend with finding the correct electronic key combination to the safes to win the booty.
The Admiral was then returned for the price of a packet of crisps and made to under go a humiliation ceremony!!!!

Stardate: 12.01.01
Admiral Andrew Fazekas is interviewed on BBC Three Counties radio about the forthcoming club event.

Stardate: 10.01.01 - Photo Shoot
Members of the club did a photo shoot for the Local press to promote the up and coming January event.

Stardate: 23.12.00 - Lutonia Christmas Party
Pictures
Our last club event at the Naval Club and despite the numbers being slightly lower than previous years due to some members going away or otherwise engaged. A brilliant time was had by those who did attend due to a real showman of a disco and a good buffet from Sean and Amanda. Also the Admiral finally put one over the club Treasure Steve Maguire with a special version of what’s in the box. Needless to say revenge was sweetly had as Steve was made to sit in front of the whole club on a chair opening a present that reflected his generation. Say no more on that shall we Steve. Also there were some expensive raffle prizes in the form of the latest in cameras and CD ROM games. We also had an away team from Starbase 410 who also joined in the fun by dressing up in tinsel. The Lutonia certainly bowed out of the Naval Club in some style even assimilating yet another late extension to midnight to send every home happy.
