The complete history of the USS Lutonia NCC-1996 - Part III
Stardate: 08.12.00 - Classic Science Fiction - Galaxy Quest Event
The Classic events are designed to normally run on a Friday night. Originally cancelled for December this event was put on at the last minute to replace another event scheduled for this date that was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately because the event took place on a Saturday night as opposed to it’s usual slot, the numbers of crew attending were down considerably on the last Classic event. None the less those of us who bothered to turn up were treated to a selection of "Thunderbirds great rescues" 30th anniversary set. Also "Galaxy Quest" and "Mission to Mars" finishing with "Dark Star" and "Red Dwarf". The event itself broke the endurance records by running from 7.30pm to 2.20am which was heavy going but fun especially for those of us consuming anything but cokes.
Stardate: 19.11.00 - Marquis mission to Starbase 410
The club decided to send a small away team consisting of just nine crewmembers in three shuttles. The mission was to take Starbase 410 completely by surprise as they had no idea we were paying them a visit. The original idea being that we would enter Starbase from opposite directions and take the crew by surprise and assimilate them. Unfortunately for the Lutonia, Starbase programs were running behind and the Starbase crew turned up the same time as the Lutonia. This meant the implementation of plan B namely the nearby Ferengi pub called the "Cock". The landlord made us so welcome that Starbase had to send members of their crew to come and haul us out.
The afternoon went well with a video and a quiz followed by interacting between clubs. The attendence was about twenty including ten members of the Lutonia. The tenth member having arrived on his own.
After the event had finished both clubs bid farewell and almost all of the Lutonia made there way to an excellent Bolian pub called the White Bear in the quadrant of Royston for an evening meal and drink. As well as to debrief about the success of the mission
Stardate: 17.11.00 - Club Auction event
Pictures
The club decided to hold an auction event. The evening consisted of a quiz and a video and an auction that was held in two parts so that any late comers would not miss out on buying something they wanted. The attendence was about twenty eight which was about average.
Stardate: 10.11.00 - Crew Quarters Event (report submitted by Lt. Commander Daniel Praid)
Transmission to Hive regarding premier of assimilation protocol known as a games and video evening. Fun was had by all who attended - 7 bi-pedal life forms in total - all of species 1582 - Human. The quantity of life forms and entertainment was sufficient in assimilating them all with ease - escape was irrelevant due to competitions of 2 Earth games - Pictionary and Scattergories, and a selection of videos including a strange film in which vehicles were used in killing innocent bystanders - a strange Earth custom indeed! And The Matrix which was an intelligence test - all passed except one Human known as Andrew Fazekas. The Collective have deemed him unacceptable for assimilation until such time in which his inability to grasp the concept of The Matrix was down to a low IQ or the vast amount of the toxin - Alcohol in his blood-stream. Overall a good assimilation technique which will require futher testing, in the future, by the Hive - end transmission
Stardate: 20.10.00 - Crew Quarters Event
The Club achieved another first at the recent Classic Science Fiction Event as a prospective new member attended having flown in from Sydney in Australia. She had a real treat as she was treated to some of the silliest SCI fi ever shown on TV. Joe 90 was a sheriff chasing bank robbers such as the Win gang. Followed by Fireball XL5 and the worst ever case of strings ever seen . And if it couldn’t get worse it did as Zelda and a time lord kidnapped Henry the third who offered his kingdom for a Zeef. Lastly The films consisted of Gremliods a pee take of Star Wars and War of the Worlds filmed on a very low budget and barbraella filmed on a very low bed. It was a full attendance and the crew did a good impression of sardines in a can. It certainly was a fun night!
Stardate: 15.10.00 - Away Mission to Starbase 410
On Stardate 15.10.00 the Lutonia sent an away team to Starbase 410. The team arrived at 1.10pm leaving time for the usual refreshments at the local Ferengi establishment. Chief of security James Hargreaves joined the away team having brought with him, David and Mark, crewmembers of the Peterborough club USS Pendragon. During the afternoon of quizzes and games being on the winning side did not mean that we were winning. As one of our crew found out and was slammed into a door and a car bonnet. Eventually fleeing through a window to escape. The "war" was a great success and the green slugs went down a dream. We also plundered the raffle prizes once again. Mission Report from Lt Commander Ann Poulton.
Stardate: 22.09.00 - Quiz night
Often the main message the Lutonia boasts is that any of the clubs members are encouraged to run an event if the member so desires and the committee approve. The proof of this statement was the club event of 22.9.00. When Club members Keith and Tracey Batt put together an evening of events that included a quiz that consisted of many questions and video clips. Many thanks to them on their hard work for the Evening. There was also two shops selling T-Shirts and classic videos to all members. The attendance was about twenty eight members and members of the public which wasn’t bad considering there had been no advertising in the form of posters for the event whatsoever.
Stardate: 21.07.00 - U.S.S Lutonia Beach Party
Admirals Report: The club held it’s last event before the summer break on stardate 21.07.00. The theme for the evening was Hawaiian and the effort made by both the crew of the Lutonia and Starbase 410 was very good. The Engineering Department excelled themselves by providing a beach complete with palm tree’s and turtles. Then there was an excellent buffet provided by Sean and Amanda and many thanks to everyone on their hard work which made the evening such a success. The Disco was very good and kept the dancefloor heaving from the start with such tunes as "Remember you’re a Klingon".
We also held a men's worst T-shirt competition which was easily won by "Windows 95" aka Ambassador John Kelly. Who had earlier swapped his first prize in the raffle for a Hawaiian lifebelt candle booby prize. The women's best coconuts prize went to Anna McKay who won the prize of a new man in her life namely "Buzz Lightyear". If you wanted to know where the aeroplane flight tickets were then check out the engineering section of this fanzine for details. Finally feedback to the club is that everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves even me. Despite being told that I could no longer drink Snakebite on the premises because it is now banned by the Naval Club. My thanks to everyone who turned up for a great evening see you in September.
Stardate: 30.06.00 - U.S.S Lutonia meets the Mayor of Luton
There was an evening to relax and have fun for the crewmembers from our club who took part in the recent Luton Carnival. Were invited to the Beach nightclub in Luton to relax and meet other carnival members and the Mayor of Luton. More importantly our club picked up its first-ever major award for its part in the Luton Millennium Carnival as covered on page one of this months fanzine. For those of you who couldn’t make it but were involved. We thank you for your support.
Stardate: 18.06.00 - Captains first away mission command (Report submitted by Captain Mark Cornwall, U.S.S.Lutonia)
The Admiral telephoned me Saturday lunchtime and informed me that he would not be attending the away mission to Starbase 410 on Sunday, leaving me to command the mission. Starbase 410 were holding their AGM and had invited us to attend the awards ceremony and BBQ afterwards. I piloted the shuttle Orion to the pickup point at St. John’s, arriving at 12:55 for a 13:00 departure, by which time only two crewmembers had arrived: Caroline and Anne. I contacted the Admiral who informed me that that was the entire away mission crew. We departed at 13:05 and due to Anne’s flawless navigation (and a route from the AA web site) we arrived at Kentford (Starbase 410’s base) at 14:20, giving us just enough time for some refreshment at The Cock, which was very welcome as the day was very hot, before finally docking with Starbase 410 at 15:00. The Starbase crew had set up a BBQ beneath a gazebo outside and some salad and pasta accompaniment inside. While the food was prepared and consumed, Ker’eth; an out of costume Klingon (it really was a hot day!) had arranged a quiz, which of cause we lost. As this was the first event of a new year for Starbase, they had some awards and promotions to hand out, not all serious! But all well deserved! After which a beautifully decorated 1st Birthday cake was presented, cut and duly devoured, yum. Outside, people were running around shooting each other with water guns and generally letting of some steam from that hot day .At about 18:15, after a very pleasant social day, we boarded the shuttle for the return journey, finally arriving in Luton around 19:30, when we retired to Yates for further refreshment and discuss the days events.
Stardate: 16.06.00 - Classic Science Fiction "Predator Event"
The crew of our club descended onto Catti’s quarters for a night with the Predator. The attendance was about twenty strong which took everyone by surprise, not only this but the Romulan ale had a rather strong element in it. The crew were treated to a variety of entertainments namely Predator one and two, Stingray, Land of the giants and The Time Tunnel. It was a long night Starting at 8pm and finishing at around 1.30am.
Stardate: 29.05.00 - Luton Millenium Carnival
Pictures
Exactly twelve months ago just three hardy souls dared to tread the streets of Luton in front of the public flying the Lutonia science fiction Flag. This year there were thirty odd of us in total. Though prior to the day a lot of hard work was done by a small group of club members namely Ann Poulton, Caroline Rick, Mark Cornwall, Gill Croucher, Catti Caraca, James Hargreaves and others who not only spent time making the club banner for our entry. But also attended a Council meeting to become our safety officer, First Aider and Stewards for the day. On the day itself we had good weather and crowds in excess of 150,000 to cheer us on. The carnival started at 3pm and it took till 5.30pm to get round. Everyone who took part enjoyed it. Waving to the crowds and blowing whistles. Needless to say film crews and radio presenters invaded us as we caught the public imagination big time. Never before has there been an entry in the carnival quite like us. It was excellent teamwork and all who took part can feel very proud indeed. . It was excellent teamwork and all who took part can feel very proud indeed.
Not to mention that we helped Lady Zia Werner School collect £145.58
Stardate: 22.05.00 - Hangover Mission
Following the previous evening when certain members went out on a massive binge of celebration. The Admiral feeling poorly still managed to bravely lead an away team to Starbase 410. Despite finding the location first time for a change the team still visited the local Ferengi bar where our gallant Admiral feasted on lager and crisps. Thankfully the galley at Starbase 410 was full of real food for which the away team were truly thankful. The event itself consisted of fun quizzes and a lesson in first aid as well as a video. Furthermore we managed to plunder the raffle prizes yet again as has become the custom. On the Journey home we stopped at another Ferengi bar called the "White Bear" in the realm of Royston for an excellent meal to round off another successful away mission.
Stardate: 12.05.00 - TV Film crew Event
There were many new faces at our regular bi-monthly event at the Naval Club. Our friends from Starbase 410 and new members to the USS Lutonia. But the guests who everyone wanted to meet were the film crew who were featuring the USS Lutonia for a foreign TV documentary. I think just about everyone was filmed as they seem to be filming everything even Starbase 410 managed to plug their club no names mentioned. Thankfully the evening was made even better by our guests from Starbase 410 who had turned up in mainly Klingon uniforms. Hopefully we will be showing two videos from the evening at our September Event namely the official video and of course those outtakes for the Admirals Dodgy Clip. Which reminds me the evening also consisted of the worst dodgy clips ever and two games of Borgo. Lastly as May is now our yearly promotion evening. Certain crewmembers were awarded promotions and Certificates to go with their new badges of rank.
Stardate: 28.04.00 - Space Hunter Classic Science Fiction Night
This has to be one of the most successful evenings ever in our series of classic science fiction evenings. Not because of the attendance which was eleven in total, four less than previous. But because when we started at 7.30pm with "Thunderbirds 2064" little did we realise we would not emerge from the strange world of science fiction until 2.30am a full seven hours later! In fact we almost made it to daybreak the following day. The evening consisted of many episodes of "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" as well as a "Star Trek" original series classic. A golden man fought an alien frog in "Lost in Space" and classic films, such as "Space Hunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" and as a bonus "Killdozer". The beer and the food flowed freely and everyone enjoyed themselves though I doubt not many thought this evening would last so long especially in our minds. These events are famous for having no set time limit on finishing and it is surely only a matter of time before a classic all nighter!
Stardate: 19.04.00 - U.S.S Lutonia AGM
The Club held it’s Annual General Meeting on stardate:19.04.00 The purpose of this meeting was to elect a new committee for the following year and to have an open forum for discussion on any matters raised. Roughly a third of the Club turned out for this meeting where due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. The Naval Club took it upon themselves to move our meeting to a smaller room to appease their own club members meeting.
This despite the fact that we had booked the room a year ago. So we would like you the members to shop about for another venue that must satisfy the following criteria. The venue must be central Luton and have good parking and transport facilities. It must have a bar and the cost to be below forty pounds to hire. So if you have any suggestions please contact me for a chat so we can check out your suggestion. In the meantime we shall continue with our current venue for the time being.
The result of the AGM was that the following crewmembers were voted onto the Committee.
Andrew Fazekas was voted Club Chairman,
Sean Drew was voted Club Vice-Chairman.
Steve Maguire was voted Club Treasurer and
Amanda Drew was voted Club Secretary.
We also had an open forum meeting where we discussed:
the Luton Carnival day.
The members also voted to proceed with the Club going onto the World Wide Web and buying it’s own screen for events.
John Kelly has resigned as ships Captain for personal reasons and we thank him for his input to the Club in the past.
Stardate: 24.03.00 - U.S.S Lutonia Science Fiction Auction Event
Despite only two thirds of the club turning up and the failure of two other clubs to arrive we still managed an attendance of thirty-five due to interested members of the Public coming along. Not only this but we also managed at least two new memberships on the night and two more from this event to come which means that the membership for March has trebled. The event itself ran smoothly thanks to our engineer’s hard work and despite ever continuing problems with our hosts who don’t really seem to appreciate us. There was a big exchange of latinum for goods and some of those goods were brought at bargain prices. The Event was notable also for the turn out of new members to the club and the new uniforms on display.
As with all our events it was hard to retrieve the crew from Ten Forward due to over flowing Romulan ale.
Stardate: 22.03.00 - Live on Radio Scotland.
Admiral Andrew Fazekas was invited to talk live to the Scottish Nation at the unearthly time of 09.00hrs. The airtime lasted just six minutes but the DJ was unable to take the pee nor were his mystery guests as the Admiral assimilated them all one by one. Plus the fact that the DJ liked the sound of his own voice too much also helped in an easy lesson in how to assimilate a DJ.
Stardate: 19.03.00 - U.S.S Lutonia assimilate Delta Quadrant Pubs
Once again the U.S.S Lutonia made the long trip to the Delta Quadrant to visit our friends at Starbase 410. And once again as so often happens there were warrior’s stories to tell round the campfire at night. Some fifteen volunteers of our gallant crew made the journey in three shuttles which once again had an incident when the pilot of the lead shuttle managed to get lost on the planet of Barrow and drove down a Ferengi driveway and did a U turn across the front lawn loyally followed by two other shuttles much to the amusement of the lawnmower man and the embarrassment of us.
Further more when Richard Daubney walked into the local Cock pub in a Ferengi mask he made an instant impression on the locals and reduced the landlord to a quivering wreck of hysterics. That aside the away team had the first of two great pub sessions that day. The crew of Starbase 410 made us very welcome with refreshments and various activities that were going on both inside and outside the hall. We also made new friends such as the original Klingon all the way from the quadrant of Manchester. Unfortunately we failed to win the bottle of Romulan Ale in the raffle though I did win a bottle of wine and Daniel won a camera. Overall the away team had an enjoyable day out with the crew of Starbase 410 and would recommend that if you still have not been there then join us on our next visit in our own new club minibus shuttle. Lastly we assimilated the Silver Lion pub in the quadrant of Liley on the way home for more Romulan Ale for the needy.
Stardate: 18.02.00
Time Travel Romulan Ale and a carnival of Monsters it can only be the Classic Science Fiction Night. Many thanks to all those who attended the Classic event at the Caraca quarters and what a night it was till 1am. Five and a half hours of drinking, eating and feasting on those classics such as Timeslip and Dr Who as well as The Time Machine and lastly Quatermass and the Pit.
Stardate: 21.01.00
Well the Club made it into the 21st Century with a successful event at the Naval Club. The crew numbered around forty that was good for our first event of the new millennium. The crew were treated to an interactive team game which involved making up your own science fiction character. Entries were very funny and were well thought up. Also there was a pass the parcel quiz and videos. We also had a raffle with a mystery what is in the bag prize. Overall this was a good evening for our first of the year and we had possible new members attending as well who were well impressed.
Stardate: 23.12.99 - Christmas Party 1999
Pictures
This may have been our last party of the 20th Century but it was a good one. The disco was excellent and kept the dancefloor heaving all night. There were some excellent raffle prizes up for grabs, but more importantly it was packed out with an attendance of 78 including members of Starbase 410 and guests. We even sneaked an extension accidentally of course.
Stardate: 10.12.99 - An Evening of Gerry Anderson
What a great evening it turned out to be with so many of the crew turning up that there was no room in the mess hall for the Admiral! Fifteen sad gits sat around a television watching those classics such as "Supercar" with a talking monkey of all things. Then we took a ride with the "Thunderbirds" and "Stingray" who were stuck in a fish tank. Not forgetting "UFO" and lastly "Space 1999" unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to see if our heroes "Sapphire and Steel" escaped from the dreaded railway station that they were stuck on all year round. Just like Virgin it must have been the wrong type of station. But viewing these classics through a haze of strong beers just gets funnier everytime. It was great to see some people actually wearing silly hats from the TV shows for this event it made for a great evening.
Stardate: 19.11.99 - November Event
The Club held it’s last activity model making event of the Century at our homebase of the Naval Club. Crewmembers were asked to bring along scissors and selotape in order to build a spaceship from household rubbish. There was also a quiz to test the braincells of all participants. The attendance was down slightly but the weather outside was very cold.
Stardate: 22.10.99 - Classic Science Fiction Evening
The Classic Science Fiction Films were still attracting members to attend to see such classics as "Day Of The Triffids" which gave us all a good laugh with the unintended one liners.
Stardate: 17.10.99 - Away Mission to Starbase 410
Once again the Lutonia accepted an invitation to attend a Starbase event. We sent two shuttles this time to the planet of Bury St Edmund’s to the Starbase homebase. We were well received and new friendships developed over the day. The event consisted of building a Borg Regeneration unit. A video of the previous Klingon bonding ceremony. Facepainting and a raffle. Our away team took time out to assimilate a local Ferengi bar that will make an excellent watering hole for our next trip over to Starbase. One of the funny moments was when upon deciding to visit a pub. Our Admiral changed into a Luton Town top to avoid attention. Upon entering the pub, no one took any notice of the away teams Star Trek uniforms. But the Admiral was the centre of attraction by locals as the pub was full of Ipswich Town fans.
Stardate: 2.10.99 - Away Mission to Klingon Bonding Ceremony
Pictures
Admiral’s bog or at least it would have been if it hadn’t been so full of Klingons.
Picture this if you can, it is Stardate 99.10.2 and I am leading an away team of two shuttles to the planet of Kentford for a Klingon Bonding Ceremony that the U.S.S Lutonia has been invited to. Having successfully navigated our shuttlecraft to our destination (shh keep quiet Daniel). And having landed safely. I headed straight for the bog. Unfortunately it really was full of Klingons male and female. So when I finally got in you can imagine how relived I was. But suddenly in walks a female Borg. I don’t think she was very impressed anyway enough was enough. I rounded up our away team and some of the Starbase crew and went to a nearby Ferengi bar. In fact we were in there so long we missed a visit by the local press. Having returned to our landing location we took part in a klingon bonding ceremony that was different to say the least. While the crew got stuck into Romulan ale and klingon bloodwine, not forgetting the squid and what ever that was that kept moving I was stuck with non-alcohol products (ghastly). The music was interesting especially a tune called "remember you’re a Klingon" by the Wombles I think. What was funnier was seeing a line of Klingons dancing to this tune while trying to play their bat’telhs like guitars. One thing was obvious, Starbase has more female crew than we do and they have been very imaginative in creating alien costumes from household items. No being ripped off by shops here. One female crew member had an original gold star trek uniform on that she had made from a set of old curtains. Which brings a new meaning to the saying "closing or opening the curtains".
But the uniform looked good as did all the other life forms that were present. Maybe we should try making our own alien life forms as well. It was a pain to have to leave our newfound friends, but we did only to get stopped by the police for the second time in a day. We left eagerly looking forward to our next away mission.
Stardate: 17.9.99 - First Contact
On stardate 17.9.99 at our homeport of the Naval Club. First Contact was established between the crew of the USS Lutonia and the crew of Starbase 410 who had sent an away team to us to make first contact. However unlike the first contact between Starbase 410 and an Ipswich Starfleet Club which by all accounts failed due to the Ipswich Club having no pulse as described by Klingon Ambassador Commander Ke’reth Zantai Makura. This historic first meeting was a major success. There were many laughs and new friendships made during the night, not least when I decided to show our Anglia TV clip only for Captain Ann Thomas to produce the Starbase Anglia TV clip as well. The Starbase crews were very friendly and took time to go round and meet members of our crew. Having spoken to Captain Ann Thomas the next day, it seems the Starbase away team was very impressed with the way they were received by our Club.
Stardate: 13.8.99 - Classic Science Fiction Night
Never Mind the Klingons Here’s The Martians!
An evening of entertainment with the Martians and some cold beer was had by some of the crew
Stardate: 31.07.99 - Futures Edge Event
Though still experiencing some technical problems the members of the crew gathered at this smaller event were treated to episodes of DS9 and a film called "The Cube" to round off the evening.
